Indeed, looks like a genuine bug. Cc’ing bug-guix so we can keep trackof it.

Yeah, I’d suggest using --no-grafts until this is fixed.
Thanks,Ludo’.

This still fails. The error I see today, using commit5aa6e0d04a3f9dea06b9d35f04fa709b31e4b343, is the following:

Are you sure this work-around works? When I add --no-grafts, I get thefollowing error:

Does the --no-grafts workaround actually work?
Or, is it that the work-around works, but for some other reasonguile-static-2.2.2 fails to cross-build on an x86_64-linux Guix systemfor the mips64el-linux-gnu target?

Hi,
The core-updates branch has been merged into master. As of5ce3f93bc52280c7c2b1b96097e8cd4a62b53bb0 (committed on 2018/02/18),which is after the merge, the following builds PASS or FAIL when run onan x86_64-linux GuixSD system:
FAIL: aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs graftsFAIL: aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs no-graftsPASS: aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static graftsPASS: aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static no-graftsFAIL: arm-unknown-linux-gnueabihf bootstrap-tarballs graftsFAIL: arm-unknown-linux-gnueabihf bootstrap-tarballs no-graftsPASS: arm-unknown-linux-gnueabihf guile-static graftsPASS: arm-unknown-linux-gnueabihf guile-static no-graftsFAIL: i686-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs graftsFAIL: i686-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs no-graftsPASS: i686-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static graftsPASS: i686-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static no-graftsFAIL: mips64el-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs graftsFAIL: mips64el-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs no-graftsPASS: mips64el-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static graftsPASS: mips64el-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static no-graftsFAIL: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs graftsFAIL: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu bootstrap-tarballs no-graftsFAIL: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static graftsFAIL: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu guile-static no-grafts
Here, PASS means it builds successfully. FAIL means it did not. Thesecond column is the target, the third column is the package, and thefourth column is whether or not grafts were enabled. Note that"guile-static" is short-hand for "-e '(@@ (gnu packages make-bootstrap)%guile-static)'". So, for example, the first row means that thefollowing command failed when I tried it:
./pre-inst-env guix build --target=aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu \ bootstrap-tarballs
The failures can be grouped as follows:
* aarch64, arm, i686: For all of these targets, bootstrap-tarballs fails because grep@3.1 fails. grep@3.1 fails because of errors like the following:

Earlier in this bug report, on 2017/11/27, I reported that a commandlike the following failed ("ERROR: In procedure load-thunk-from-memory:No such file or directory"), even though using --no-grafts had beensuggested as a work-around:
/pre-inst-env guix build --no-grafts --target=mips64el-linux-gnu \ bootstrap-tarballs
By using git bisect, I was able to determine that the commit whichintroduced that specific issue was2acfe022a740f79b593348cc6362cc4ee8f33bb4, which updatedguile-static-stripped to 2.2.
In sum, the original errors are no longer occurring, which is great. Now we need to fix the remaining problems listed above.

So, for example, the first row means that the> following command failed when I tried it:>> ./pre-inst-env guix build --target=aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu \> bootstrap-tarballs
Using Guix 3694c0d on x86_64 and the line,
time guix build --target=$arch bootstrap-tarballs -q --no-grafts time guix build --target=$arch bootstrap-tarballs -q
I get this:

In other words, it is not a cross-compilation issue. :-)
WDYT to close this old report and open another one addressing thecurrent issues; if they are.
All the best,simon

I agree we can close this old bug report. As you mentioned, it is nowpossible to build bootstrap binaries for various architectures.
If someone needs to build bootstrap binaries for a specificarchitecture, and they are unable to do so, then they should open a newbug report for that problem specifically. Currently, I have no need todo this, since I am not bootstrapping any new architectures at themoment, or updating any bootstrap binaries.
If nobody else comments, I'll close this bug report in a week or two.
